Its our favorite time of year around here. The weather has shifted, the crowds have thinned, we can take a deep breath and remember why we live here. It’s also one of the best times of the year to find yourself a truly large trout with a fly rod and the Beaverhead is one of the best rivers around to get that done. The flow is still at a great level…735 cfs out of the dam. The fish are fat and healthy. There are some absolute pigs in this river right now. You can pretty much pick your poison at this point…baetis on top in the slick water, small nymphs down deep or fast twitched streamers…probably the most exciting option. On cloudy days you’ll get a chase on every other cast, it’s that good. You’ll miss more than you’ll put in the net but who can argue with that kind of action? If you can’t stand it and get frustrated with the misses tie on a small Lightning Bug, Prince Nymph or Pheasant Tail.
