Beadhead- Allison’s Rootbeer Flasher
We’ve taken to calling it the Beaverhead Syndrome. Two decades ago fishing the Beaverhead River meant, more times than not, stripping #4 Girdle Bugs and Wooly Buggers. Pretty straightforward stuff. Yes, there were some guys out there throwing #16s and #18s but for the most part it just wasn’t that technical. Then something happened, a switch was flipped. More and more to be consistently successful there you needed to throw tiny flies, light tippets and micro shot. The fish became “educated” for want of a better term. To some extent the same thing, it seems, has happened on the Madison. Don’t get me wrong, many are the days when a #4 Girdle Bug or Wooly Bugger does the trick but, particularly later in the season after the fish have been stung a few times by our larger offerings. This pattern has quickly become one of our “go to” bugs when the fish get a little picky later in the season (and sometimes early). It works well drifted in tandem with another smaller pattern as well as hung off the back of a larger streamer or nymph and bounced on the bottom. Try a few of these tiny bugs the next time the fish are eluding you here or anywhere. You might just flip their switch. Available in sizes 16 & 18.

BeadHead- Angel Hair Pheasant Tail
This is one of my personal all time favorite nymphs. This thing has enough subtle flash to get noticed in fast or slightly off-color water but a realistic enough profile and color scheme to not put the fish off. On cloudy days I generally drop a silver Lightning Bug but on bright sunny days I use one of these. I have had some spectacular days dropping this fly off the back of a hopper pattern here on the Madison. Available in sizes 12, 14, 16 and 18.

Beadhead- Angelcase Emerger-BWO
Sometimes a slight tweak is all it takes to truly transform an already great pattern. The addition of that small tuft of Angel Hair dubbing mimics the just-about-to-unfurl wings of the emerging mayfly. The sparkly dubbing gives a slight flash very similar to the air bubble causing the unfurling. This tiny change to an already classic pattern (the Pheasant Tail Nymph) can really serve as a trigger to fish keying on the ascending and emerging bugs. The BWO version is generally best fished on cloudy days in either early spring or late fall when the naturals are present. Available in sizes 16 & 18.

BeadHead- CDC Halloween
One of many very effective newer bead head nymphs from the Madison Valley’s own Dan Delekta. This fly is a guides favorite here on the Madison as well as most other western freestone rivers. We tend to start throwing this bug about mid-summer or so and continue on into the late fall. It may be a decent pattern to imitate an October Caddis larva. It also fishes well for early spring steelhead in the larger sizes. Available in sizes 8, 10, 12, & 14.

BeadHead- Copper John
One of the juiciest new bugs to come along in some time. We absolutely had to carry these. A cross between a Brassie and a Pheasant Tail. Spring creek and tailwater fishers grab some of these NOW!

BeadHead- Copper John-Red
The Copper John is another one of our favorite newer flies here in SW Montana. It's been around now for a few years but it seems someone comes up with a new color variation every couple. The red CJ seems to work on and off throughout the summer months starting some time in early July. Some folks are convinced the fish eat it for a Yellow Sally nymph. I'm not so sure. What I do know is that when they are working they out-fish everything else (except maybe a red Lightning Bug) three or four to one. Available in sizes 14 and 16.
