Gear You Need to Fish the Madison River
When it comes to gear, there's a multitude of different options you can choose from. In fact, choosing the right equipment to fish the Madison may seem daunting at first. We've done our best to compile this list to cover all of your needs for our home river. If after reading this list you still have questions, feel free to contact us, we would love to talk with you!
Rods: The 6 Weight is the quintessential rod of the American West. The Madison Valley is no stranger to the wind, and a 6 Weight rod will be your bestfriend for cutting through it.
Leaders: The current is often strong and fierce, due to this we fish with 2x and 3x for the majority of the year. When nymphing it is common practice to use a 7.5ft leader. For dry flies we recommend using a 9ft leader.
Rainwear: We cannot stress enough how vital it is to bring proper rain gear. The weather in our valley fluctuates fast.
Waders: Goretex waders and wading boots are the gold standard from September up until late May. During the summer months Teva's and Chaco's are ok, but don't provide great traction in rivers like the Madison. Felt soles are still legal in Montana and encouraged for wading the upper Madison. Just be sure to clean and inspect prior to use.
Polarized Sunglasses: A good pair of sunglasses can make or break the day. We recommend copper or bronze lenses to optimize your ability to spot fish within the river.
Sunscreen: Don't be Cousin Eddie. Put sunscreen on today so you can fish tomorrow!
Warm Clothes: It's best to fish in layers. Bring a pair of gloves and a warm hat to maximize your comfort.
Montana Fishing License: At the end of the day, a Montana Fishing License is the single most important thing you that you need to bring with.
