Fly Fishing the Louisiana Bayou for Bull Redfish
Fly Fishing the Louisiana Bayou for Bull Redfish
The complete winter kit — rods, reels, lines, leaders, flies, and Gore-Tex — for 30-pound bulls in the Louisiana marsh.
From October through February, the marsh south of New Orleans, Louisiana holds the heaviest redfish on the Gulf Coast — winter bulls that push 30 pounds and eat a fly with bad intentions. We host this trip every year from the Dogwood Lodge, and the gear below is what our guides and returning anglers actually fish: 9wt rods, sealed-drag reels, cold-rated redfish lines, short heavy leaders, a short list of proven flies, and serious Gore-Tex for cold morning boat runs.
Want the full story of how these trips fish? Read our trip reports: Big Fish on the Bayou and Louisiana Trip Report — November 2021.
Inventory note: every link below was verified in stock on MRFC.com as of September 30, 2026 — each opens the exact size and weight listed, with our own product photos at 1800×1200. A few sold-out ideal sizes are flagged on their cards, where we linked the closest in-stock option instead.
The short answer: a 9-weight, a sealed drag, and a cold-rated redfish line
A fast-action 9wt rod, a sealed-drag reel with real backing capacity, a cold-rated floating redfish line, short 15–20lb leaders, a heavy crab — and Gore-Tex everything. That’s the whole game.
The Kit, in Six Pieces
The rod: A fast-action 9wt is the all-arounder for winter bulls — powerful enough to punch a heavy crab through the wind, with the backbone to move a 30-pounder off the marsh edge. An 8 or 10wt covers the margins.
The reel: Don’t go too cheap here. A sealed drag is the non-negotiable — a bull redfish’s first run will find every weakness in a bargain reel. Every reel below is sealed, in stock, and ready for the marsh.
The line: Floating only — that’s all you need on the bayou. Cold-rated with a short, powerful head for quick close shots at tailing fish, and a half size heavy to turn over big flies in the wind.
The connection: Keep it short and stout: short 5–9 ft leaders are key on our trips, and 15–20lb test handles oyster shell and bull redfish mouths.
The flies: Don’t overthink it. Just put the fly right in front of the fish. A heavy crab, a shrimp pattern, something dark — in a few weights for different scenarios.
The clothing: Think warm and dry, and hope for warm and dry weather. Layer insulation under a real GORE-TEX shell — jacket plus bibs — with gloves, a winter hat, and deck boots for cold morning boat runs.
The Rods
A fast-action 9wt is the all-around winter bull rod — enough gun for the wind and heavy flies, enough backbone for 30-pound fish. An 8wt fishes calmer days; a 10wt covers the windiest ones. Our favorites, from value to flagship:

TFO Mangrove Coast
$399.95Built with the entry-level to intermediate saltwater angler in mind, the Mangrove Coast's moderate-fast action loads quickly so you can unload an accurate shot at a cruising bull. When fish start moving out, there's enough power in the butt to pick up line and reposition — and enough backbone to keep a 30-pounder out of the marsh grass.
In stock in 9wt — all weights 6 through 12 available.
Best for: Anglers new to the bayou, or anyone who wants maximum rod for minimum money.
Sage Signal
$795.00The Sage Signal brings a smart blend of responsive loop control, tenacious strength, and uncomplicated castability to the marsh — equally ready for short, punchy shots at fast-approaching bulls or long, subtle deliveries down a bank. KonneticHD technology, a Fuji ceramic stripper guide, and oversized guides shoot heavy crab patterns with ease.
In stock in 9wt; weights 7 through 12 available (6wt out).
Best for: A responsive, easy-casting step up at mid-range money.

Scott Wave
$694.95Light in hand, the Wave generates high line speeds and controlled tight loops to cut through the winter wind off the Gulf and deliver flies on target — with pulling power to spare when a big bull heads for the horizon. Handcrafted in Montrose, Colorado, it's equally at home punching into a headwind or laying a crab softly in front of a tailing fish.
In stock in 9wt; weights 8, 9, 10, and 11 available.
Best for: Windy-day power and pulling strength without the flagship price.
Sage R8 Salt
$1,150.00The SALT R8 is built for the sight-fishing game: it loads quickly and predictably, with a sweet spot that's intuitive to feel — critical when your time expires by the third false cast and the bull is still moving. New R8 graphite adds 25% more strength-per-weight, boosting pulling power while keeping the touch for close-range shots along the marsh edge.
In stock in 9wt — every weight from 6 to 15 available.
Best for: Quick-loading accuracy when shots are few and the stakes are high.

Winston Air 2 Max
$1,244.95Max accuracy, max power, max line speed — the AIR 2 MAX is Winston's fastest taper yet, made to handle strong winds and make quick, precise casts at moving fish. Proprietary AIR 2 and boron materials deliver the highest strength-to-weight ratio Winston has ever built, so a 9wt still feels light in hand after a full day of blind-casting the marsh.
In stock in 9wt; weights 6 through 12 available.
Best for: Maximum line speed and Montana-built craftsmanship.
G. Loomis NRX+ Salt
$990.00Built for the split-second chaos of saltwater — walloping wind, cloud cover, changing light — the NRX+ delivers the power, line speed, and loop stability expected from a modern fast-action rod without giving up feel and finesse for short shots. Recoil snake guides and titanium SiC strippers stand up to salt and heavy winter use. The 8wt was a highlighted rod on our own Louisiana trips; the 9wt is the all-arounder.
In stock in 9wt; weights 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12 available.
Best for: Versatility in ugly conditions — wind, clouds, and long skiff runs.

Thomas & Thomas Sextant
$1,095.00The Sextant meets saltwater's triple demand — accuracy, delicacy, and power — with a unique reinforcement strategy that sharpens strength and recovery. It loads quickly and generates wind-cutting line speed with less effort. The 9wt Sextant was one of the highlighted rods on MRFC's own Louisiana trips, and it fishes as good as it looks in the marsh.
In stock in 9wt — it sold out earlier today and came back. All weights 6 through 12 available.
Best for: Short-shot accuracy with long-shot power in one package — our trip-proven pick.
Hardy Marksman Z
$1,050.00Developed with some of the finest guides in the saltwater world, the Marksman Z blends feel, power, recovery, and outright durability. Sintrix FLT keeps overall weight down while ceramic-lined titanium stripper guides and titanium recoil snake guides stand up to the salt. Plenty of reserve power for turning a bull that's decided to visit the next parish.
In stock in 9wt; weights 7 through 12 available (6wt out).
Best for: Guide-proven durability when the pressure's on.

The Reels
A good, dependable reel matters in all saltwater fly fishing — don’t go too cheap here. A bull redfish’s first run will find every weakness in a bargain drag. Our favorites, sized for 9wt rods:

Lamson Litespeed M8 / Hyperspeed
$849.95The Litespeed M is Lamson's large-arbor saltwater platform — famously light, smooth, and corrosion-resistant. Need to keep up with a bull that just turned and burned? The Hyperspeed M8 picks up 14 inches of line per crank — the fastest retrieve in its class. Both are made in the USA and fully sealed against the marsh.
Both the Litespeed M8 and Hyperspeed M8 are in stock in their single saltwater size.
Best for: Anglers who want maximum retrieve speed without the swing weight.
Lamson Remix
$299.95The Remix S is the ultimate hybrid — a CNC-machined bar-stock case for maximum rigidity paired with a pressure-cast spool, giving you high-end bones at a mid-tier price. It runs larger diameters and arbors with more capacity than the original Remix, so a 9+ holds a 9wt line and plenty of backing for bulls.
In stock in 9+; sizes 7+, 9+, and 11+ all available.
Best for: The budget-conscious bayou tripper who refuses to fish a junk drag.

Sage Enforcer
$600.00Born of Sage's renowned THERMO big-game bluewater reels and fine-tuned for the flats, the Enforcer is built for the explosive runs of heavy fish. Maximum drag is up 50% over its predecessor, with a fully sealed carbon drag that shrugs off salt, spray, and the occasional dunk off the skiff deck.
In stock in 9-10wt; sizes 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 all available.
Best for: Anglers who fish heavy tippets and don't want to palm a screaming spool.
Bauer SLT
$995.00Bauer's SLT runs a cutting-edge alternating stainless steel and carbon disc stack that disperses heat and engages ultra-smooth, with a linear drag curve — the same resistance at every click, plus hard stops to prevent over-tightening. Fully sealed, with tarpon-grade headroom for the biggest bulls in the marsh.
In stock in 9/10/11; the 7/8/9 is also available (11/12+ sold out).
Best for: Anglers who want a sealed, set-it-and-forget-it drag with big-fish headroom.

Nautilus CCF-X2
$694.95The award-winning CCF-X2's dual-action drag delivers 20+ pounds of strength with twice the smoothness and half the startup inertia of its predecessor, fully sealed with Nautilus's Activseal technology. A longtime favorite on our Louisiana trips — a bull redfish's first run will find every weakness in a bargain reel, and this one has none.
The ideal #8/10 is sold out, so we're linking the in-stock #10/12 — more backing capacity for bulls, and it still balances a 9wt.
Best for: The value hunter who wants sealed Nautilus drag technology without the flagship price. The ideal #8/10 is sold out — linking the in-stock #10/12 instead.
Nautilus GTS
$655.00Step up to the GTS and you get Nautilus's latest drag architecture in a made-in-the-USA frame — smooth, sealed, and built for hard saltwater use. It's a superb reel; the only catch is sizing right now.
Honest flag: only the 5/6 is in stock, which is light for a 9wt rod. The 7/8 is the size you want — check back, or step up to the CCF-X2 above.
Best for: Nautilus fans who want the newest drag platform — once the 7/8 is back. Only the 5/6 is in stock — a 7/8 would be the call for a 9wt.

Abel SDS 9/10
$1,379.00Winner of Best New Saltwater Reel at the 2016 ICAST/IFTD show, the SDS (Sealed Drag Salt) packs a unique multi-disc drag with an industry-leading 20+ pounds of braking power, completely sealed from the elements. Machined from cold-finished 6061 bar stock in California — the buy-once reel for a lifetime of bulls.
In stock in the 9/10 size — the right match for a 9wt rod.
Best for: The buy-once angler — a reel that will outlast every rod you own. Linked the in-stock 9/10 size instead of the 7/8.
Fly Lines
Floating only — that’s all you need on the bayou. The right line is cold-rated with a short, powerful head for quick close shots at tailing fish, and a half size heavy to turn over big flies in the wind. Our trips have fished RIO Premier XP Redfish, SA Redfish Cold, and RIO Premier Redfish — here are the current in-stock picks:
SA Amplitude Smooth Redfish Cold
$99.95Our top pick for winter bulls. SA built this line specifically for cold-weather redfish: a short head and short front taper for quick shots at tailing fish in shallow marsh water on chilly mornings, made a half-size heavy to turn over large flies in the wind, with AST Plus slickness for shooting ability and durability. Floating only — which is all you need on the bayou.
In stock in WF-9-F; WF-8-F and WF-10-F also available.
Best for: Winter bull redfish — the cold-rated line this trip calls for.

RIO Premier Redfish
$99.99RIO's Redfish taper uses a mid-length front taper for careful, delicate presentations of crab and shrimp patterns to wary bulls, with a short easy-loading head that loads the rod at close range — where most of our shots happen. A medium-stiff core and hard coating perform across the range of temperatures you'll see targeting redfish, with SlickCast coating for slickness and durability.
In stock in WF-9-F; WF-7-F and WF-8-F also available.
Best for: Delicate close-range presentations to wary winter bulls.
RIO Premier Redfish XP
$99.99The XP taper is RIO's extra-power option for the larger fish and flies typical of Gulf redfishing — a short front taper turns over big mullet and baitfish patterns, and the short head loads at close range for quick shots at bulls. Same medium-stiff core, hard coating, and SlickCast as the standard Redfish taper, with more horsepower.
Only WF-8-F is in stock (WF-9-F and WF-10-F are out) — one line weight under for a 9wt rod, so it fishes best underlined or on an 8wt.
Best for: Maximum turnover power for the biggest flies and bulls. Only WF-8-F in stock — one weight under for a 9wt rod.

Leader & Tippet
Keep it short and stout. On our trips, short 5–6 ft leaders were key to making those close shots — bulls routinely eat with the leader inside the rod tip. A 9’ fluorocarbon leader cut back, or 15–20lb fluoro tippet, is all you need. Go 20lb around oyster shell; these fish don’t care about tippet size.

SA Absolute Redfish Leader 10'
$8.95A redfish-specific 10' tapered leader in medium-stiff nylon with 29% higher wet knot strength than SA's previous material, designed to reduce water absorption while staying supple. The extra foot over standard 9' leaders gives stealthier presentations to spooky bulls in skinny winter water — at a price that makes stocking up easy.
In stock in 20lb; 12 and 16lb also available.
Best for: The redfish-specific leader — purpose-built and budget-friendly.
SA Absolute Saltwater Leader 9'
$16.95100% fluorocarbon 9' leader with 15% higher wet knot strength than SA's previous material, built for clarity and abrasion resistance around oyster shell and marsh edges. Fluorocarbon's low visibility and toughness make it the right call for clear winter water and wary bulls — and for fish that eat with the leader inside the rod tip.
In stock in 20lb; 10, 12, and 16lb also available.
Best for: Clear water and oyster shell — maximum abrasion resistance and invisibility.

Umpqua Deceiver HD Leader 9'
$12.95A 100% fluorocarbon big-game leader designed for casting power, near invisibility, and a fast sink rate — built for big critters in fresh and salt water. A solid value alternative to SA's fluoro leader when you want a fast-sinking presentation with stout turnover for heavy winter flies.
In stock in 20lb; 8 through 20lb all available.
Best for: Fast-sinking presentations and stout turnover at a value price.
SA Absolute Saltwater Tippet 30M
$16.95Stiff 100% fluorocarbon tippet with 15% higher wet knot strength for excellent turnover of large winter redfish flies, plus clarity and abrasion resistance against rough bull redfish mouths. This is the same saltwater tippet family we fished on our own Louisiana trips — carry 15 and 20lb and rebuild leaders on the fly.
In stock in 20lb; 10, 12, and 16lb also available.
Best for: Rebuilding leaders and stepping up to 20lb for bulls.

Umpqua Deceiver HD Tippet
$14.95Incredibly stiff and abrasion-resistant 100% fluorocarbon on 25-yard spools — fast-sinking and virtually invisible to fish. Good for building heavier winter bite leaders for bull redfish, with 25–40lb sizes in stock if you want a true shock-tippet setup.
In stock in 20lb; the full 8–40lb range is available.
Best for: Heavy bite leaders and shock-tippet setups up to 40lb.
The Flies
Don’t overthink it. Just put the fly right in front of the fish. Tan/brown was the top color on our trips, black/purple next, with some chartreuse mixed in. Carry a few different weights depending on the scenario — heavy crabs for tailing fish in skinny water, lighter patterns when they’re spooky:
Hopedale Crab — Olive
$7.95Proven on winter Louisiana bulls over 30 lbs. Extra-heavy lead eyes and a stout saltwater hook make this a heavy crab that drops fast right in front of tailing fish — which is exactly where it needs to be.
In stock.
Best for: Tailing bulls in skinny water — the proven winter pattern.

Hopedale Crab — Brown
$7.95Same proven winter-Louisiana bull pattern as the olive — heavy lead eyes get it down fast in front of fish, and it has fooled big black drum too. Tan/brown was the top color on our trip reports, so this one starts in the box.
In stock.
Best for: The first fly we tie on — tan/brown was the top color on our trips.
Shrimp Tease — Black
$6.50A mix of flash, rubber legs, and built-in weight designed as an all-around redfish fly. The black silhouette reads well in the stained marsh water our trip reports call for — a shrimp-type pattern to pair with the crabs.
In stock.
Best for: Stained water and shrimp-eating bulls.

Swamp Fox — Purple
$5.95Guide Josh Boyles' signature redfish pattern. The purple colorway matches the black/purple tier from our trip reports and offers a darker profile for close-range shots at winter bulls.
In stock.
Best for: Close-range shots — a dark profile bulls can't ignore.
Po Boy — Purple/Black
$9.95A big, heavy purple-and-black bull-redfish fly built for the Louisiana marsh. The point-up jig hook rides weedless over oysters and grass — fish it deep where profile and sink rate matter most.
In stock in #2/0 (a #2 is also available).
Best for: Deep channels and marsh edges — the heavyweight option.

Colby's Gulf Coast Corona Toad
$10.95A large, high-profile Gulf Coast attractor with a big silhouette and lively action. Strip-and-pause it on flats and marsh edges as the heavier, different-look option in the box — the one that gets eaten when nothing else does.
In stock.
Best for: The wildcard — a big attractor when bulls want something different.
Staying Warm & Dry
Winter on the bayou means cold morning boat runs, wind, and rain. Think warm and dry, and hope for warm and dry weather. Layer insulation under a real GORE-TEX shell — our crew fished the Simms ProDry jacket and bibs — and don’t forget gloves, a winter hat, and deck boots:
Simms ProDry Jacket
$699.95The exact jacket our crew wore on the Louisiana trips. A waterproof-breathable GORE-TEX Pro shell with 80D fabric in high-wear areas and lighter 70D elsewhere for mobility. The 3-way adjustable hood, high collar, and single-hand adjustable cuffs keep driving rain out on cold morning boat runs, while articulated sleeves leave room for insulating layers underneath.
In stock in Medium; XX-Large and 3X-Large also available (some middle sizes out).
Best for: The outer shell — GORE-TEX armor for wind, rain, and cold boat runs.

Simms ProDry Bib
$699.95The matching ProDry bib our crew wore. Cut from GORE-TEX Pro waterproof-breathable 3-layer fabric with abrasion-resistant overlays mapped onto the knees and seat for deck work. A full-length center-front zipper and adjustable spacer-mesh suspenders keep it comfortable over a long day, with dual handwarmer pockets and a zippered chest pocket.
In stock in Large; XX-Large and 3X-Large also available (Medium and XL out).
Best for: Full lower-body protection — bibs beat rain pants on the skiff.
Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody
$299.00Warm, windproof, and water-resistant — the Nano Puff uses lightweight, highly compressible insulation for reliable warmth with easy packability. A natural layering piece under the ProDry jacket on frosty boat runs, and it stands alone when the midday sun takes the edge off. This one wears the MRFC Fitz Roy trout logo.
In stock in Large; Medium and XX-Large also available.
Best for: The insulating mid-layer — warmth without bulk.

Simms ExStream Neoprene Glove
$119.95Simms' cold-weather savior for the coldest, wettest conditions. Seamless, 4-way stretch 3mm neoprene with watertight stitchless construction blocks wind and spray on the skiff, while the non-slip silicone palm keeps hands secure on the rod and line.
In stock in Large; Small, Medium, and X-Large also available.
Best for: Cold, wet mornings when bare hands stop working.
Simms WINDSTOPPER Beanie
$59.95An acrylic knit beanie with a GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER interior liner for real weatherproofing against wind ripping across open bayou water. One size fits most, and it's crafted without PFAS.
In stock.
Best for: Wind protection for your head on open-water runs.

Simms Challenger Deck Boot
$169.95Simms' dedicated deck boot: a vulcanized-rubber outer with neoprene lining for guaranteed waterproof protection, plus Simms' proprietary rugged deck outsole for grip and traction on wet decks. A pull-on loop makes them easy to slip on and off at the ramp — no laces, no fuss.
In stock in size 12; sizes 8 and 13 also available (9–11 out).
Best for: Dry, sure feet on wet skiff decks all day.
Simms SunGaiter
$39.95We love the Simms SunGaiter for its perforated breathing holes — the vented front flange on the 2026 model lets you breathe unrestricted all day. In winter it doubles as a wind break for your face on cold boat runs.
In stock.
Best for: Face protection — sun, wind, and spray.
