Essential Gear for Fly Fishing The Bahamas
Essential Gear for Fly Fishing the Bahamas
Everything but the flies — rods, reels, lines, leaders, and the rest of the kit for a Bahamas flats trip.
Bonefishing the Bahamas is the finest shallow-water game on earth — and the gear matters less than the eyes. But the right rod, reel, and line make every day on the flats better. Below is everything we take when we’re headed south: rods, reels, lines, leaders, tools, footwear, and sun protection — all in stock now at MRFC in Ennis, Montana.
Flies are the one thing this guide doesn’t cover. For those, see our companion post: Essential Flies for Bonefishing the Bahamas.
Inventory note: every link below was verified in stock on MRFC.com as of September 30, 2026 — each opens the exact size and weight listed, with our own product photos at 1800×1200. A handful of sold-out ideal sizes are flagged on their cards, where we linked the closest in-stock option instead.
The short answer: an 8-weight, a 9–15 ft leader, and a bonefish line
A fast-action 8wt rod, a sealed-drag reel, a bonefish-taper floating line, 9–15 ft of fluorocarbon, and pliers with a cutter. That’s the whole game — everything else is comfort and insurance.
The Kit, in Five Pieces
The rod: A fast-action 8wt is the all-around Bahamas workhorse — powerful enough for the wind, delicate enough for a shot at 40 feet. A 7 or 9wt might also be appropriate depending on conditions and preferences.
The reel: A good, dependable reel is important in all saltwater fly fishing — don’t go too cheap here. A bonefish’s first run will find every weakness in a bargain drag. Every reel below is sealed, in stock, and ready for the flats.
The line: The right fly line makes the rod feel great; the wrong line makes you struggle. We mainly fish weight-forward floating lines — overline by a half or full weight to load fast rods deeper and shoot line better.
The connection: 9–15 ft leaders, with 12lb test covering most settings and most flies. Fluorocarbon buys invisibility in gin-clear water.
The rest: Pliers with a cutter, a waterproof bag, flats footwear, and serious sun protection — plus polarized sunglasses, the absolute must of bonefishing.
The Rods
A fast-action 8wt is the all-around Bahamas workhorse — enough gun for the wind, enough touch for close shots. A 7wt fishes lighter days; a 9wt covers windy days and bigger flies. Our favorites, from value to flagship:

TFO Mangrove Coast
$399.95Built with the entry-level to intermediate saltwater angler in mind, the Mangrove Coast's moderate-fast action loads quickly so you can unload an accurate shot at a tailing bonefish. When fish start moving out, there's enough power in the butt to pick up line and reposition at distance. Saltwater-safe Fuji Concept-O strippers, fighting butts on every model, and cleverly machined hook keepers round out a rod that's pure value at $399.95.
In stock: 6wt, 7wt, 8wt, 9wt, 10wt, 11wt, 12wt.
Best for: Anglers new to the flats, or anyone who wants maximum rod for minimum money.
Sage Signal
$795.00The Sage Signal brings a smart blend of responsive loop control, tenacious strength, and uncomplicated castability to the flats — equally ready for short, punchy shots at fast-approaching targets or long, subtle deliveries. KonneticHD technology, a Fuji ceramic stripper guide, oversized hard-chromed snake guides, and a corrosion-resistant anodized aluminum reel seat give it the saltwater stamina to stand apart from the pack.
In stock: 7wt, 8wt, 9wt, 10wt, 11wt, 12wt. (The 6wt is currently sold out.)
Best for: A responsive, easy-casting step up at mid-range money.

Scott Wave
$694.95Light in hand, the Wave generates high line speeds and controlled tight loops to cut through wind and deliver flies on target — with pulling power to spare when a big bonefish heads for the horizon. Equally at home slam fishing the flats, it's handcrafted in Montrose, Colorado with SiC stripping guides and super-grade cork. Scott calls it the greatest performance value they've ever created.
In stock: 8wt, 9wt, 10wt, 11wt. (6wt, 7wt, and 12wt are currently sold out.)
Best for: Windy-day power and pulling strength without the flagship price.
Sage R8 Salt
$1,150.00The SALT R8 is built for the sight-fishing game: it loads quickly and predictably, with a sweet spot that's intuitive to feel — critical when your time expires by the third false cast. New R8 graphite adds 25% more strength-per-weight, boosting pulling power while keeping touch for precision short shots. A fast-action flagship with a precisely honed taper that puts the fly in the right place at the right time.
In stock: 6wt, 7wt, 8wt, 9wt, 10wt, 11wt, 12wt, 15wt.
Best for: Quick-loading accuracy when shots are few and the stakes are high.

Winston Air 2 Max
$1,244.95Max accuracy, max power, max line speed — the AIR 2 MAX is Winston's fastest taper yet, made to handle strong winds and make quick, precise casts on the flats. Proprietary AIR 2 and boron materials deliver the highest strength-to-weight ratio they've ever built without compromising castability or lightness in hand. Designed and handcrafted in Twin Bridges, Montana — about 42 miles from our shop.
In stock: 6wt–12wt (9'0" models; the 8wt 8'6" is also in stock).
Best for: Maximum line speed and Montana-built craftsmanship. Linked the 8wt 9'0"-4pc; the 8wt 8'6"-4pc is also in stock.
G. Loomis NRX+ Salt
$990.00Built for the split-second chaos of saltwater — walloping wind, cloud cover, changing light — the NRX+ delivers the power, line speed, and loop stability expected from a modern fast-action rod without giving up feel and finesse for short shots. Recoil snake guides, titanium SiC stripper guides, and a custom aluminum reel seat with fighting butt finish it off. Handcrafted in Woodland, Washington.
In stock: 8wt, 9wt, 10wt, 11wt, 12wt. (The 7wt is currently sold out.)
Best for: Versatility in ugly conditions — wind, clouds, and long skiff runs.

Thomas & Thomas Sextant
$1,095.00The Sextant meets saltwater's triple demand — accuracy, delicacy, and power — with a unique reinforcement strategy that sharpens strength and recovery. It loads quickly and generates wind-cutting line speed and distance with less effort. Precise on short shots yet carrying the backbone to punch flies long through the wind — exactly the range bonefishing demands.
In stock: 6wt, 7wt, 8wt, 10wt, 11wt, 12wt. (The 9wt is currently sold out.)
Best for: Short-shot accuracy with long-shot power in one package.
Hardy Marksman Z
$1,050.00Developed with some of the finest guides in the saltwater world, the Marksman Z blends feel, power, recovery, and outright durability. Sintrix FLT keeps overall weight down while ceramic-lined titanium stripper guides and titanium recoil snake guides stand up to the salt. Hardy's rod of choice for high-pressure saltwater situations — which is exactly what the bow of a skiff is.
In stock: 7wt, 8wt, 9wt, 10wt, 11wt, 12wt. (The 6wt is currently sold out.)
Best for: Guide-proven durability when the pressure's on.

The Reels
A good, dependable reel matters in all saltwater fly fishing — don’t go too cheap here. A bonefish’s first run will find every weakness in a bargain drag. Our favorites:

Lamson Litespeed M8 / Hyperspeed
from $830The Litespeed M is Lamson's large-arbor saltwater platform — famously light, smooth, and corrosion-resistant. Need to keep up with a bonefish that just turned and burned 150 yards? The Hyperspeed M8 picks up 14 inches of line per crank — the fastest retrieve rate per ounce Lamson has ever dreamed up — backed by an IPX8 waterproof Cobalt drag and made-in-the-USA CNC machining.
In stock: Litespeed M8; Hyperspeed M8 (Coastal) also in stock.
Best for: Anglers who want maximum retrieve speed without the swing weight.
Lamson Remix
$290The Remix S is the ultimate hybrid — a CNC-machined bar-stock case for maximum rigidity paired with a pressure-cast spool, giving you high-end bones at a mid-tier price. Compared to the original Remix it runs larger diameters and arbors with a bigger, easier-grip drag knob, and the HD version adds a full frame for thin running lines. The 7+ holds a WF8 and 200 yards of 20# backing — honest flats capacity for bonefish money.
In stock: 7+, 9+, 11+.
Best for: The budget-conscious flats tripper who refuses to fish a junk drag.

Sage Enforcer
$600Born of Sage's renowned THERMO big-game bluewater reels and fine-tuned for the flats, the Enforcer is built for the explosive runs of double-digit bonefish. Maximum drag is up 50% over its predecessor — 8 pounds at the arbor in the 7/8 — with beefed-up O-rings and drag plates for added durability and consistency. It lets you fish heavy tippets and turn a fish without sacrificing your metacarpals.
In stock: 7-8wt, 9-10wt, 11-12wt.
Best for: Flats anglers who fish heavy tippets and don't want to palm a screaming spool.
Tibor Everglades
$850Since its introduction in 1995, Ted Juracsik's Tibor has been the reel discerning saltwater anglers measure everything else against. Its impregnated cork disc drag is billed as the strongest, smoothest, and most reliable in the water, with all internals sealed from the elements and a large arbor that takes up line fast on reel-smoking species like bonefish and permit. Serialized, made and assembled in the USA.
In stock: 7/8/9 (single-size reel).
Best for: The angler buying a reel for the next thirty years, not the next three.

Bauer SLT
$895Bauer's SLT runs a cutting-edge alternating stainless steel and carbon disc stack that disperses heat and engages ultra-smooth, with a linear drag curve — the same resistance at every click, plus hard stops to prevent over-tightening or free-spooling. Every internal is sealed against salt, mud, and sand. Built to handle tarpon, giant trevally, and arapaima, a hot Bahamian bonefish is well within its comfort zone.
In stock: 7/8/9, 9/10/11. (The 11/12+ is currently sold out.)
Best for: Anglers who want a sealed, set-it-and-forget-it drag with tarpon-grade headroom.
Nautilus CCF-X2 / GTS
from $595The award-winning CCF-X2's dual-action drag delivers 20+ pounds of strength with twice the smoothness and half the startup inertia of its predecessor, fully sealed with Nautilus's Activseal technology. Step up to the GTS and you get Nautilus's revolutionary drag curve — 90% of usable drag in the first knob turn for light tippets, a second turn for bonefish and baby tarpon on heavy tippet. Two modern sealed-drag reels, both made in the USA, both priced well under the flagships.
In stock: CCF-X2 6/8, 10/12, Silver King 12; GTS 5/6. (The CCF-X2 8/10 and GTS 7/8 are currently sold out — linked the closest in-stock sizes.)
Best for: The value hunter who wants sealed Nautilus drag technology without the flagship price. CCF-X2 8/10 and GTS 7/8 sold out — linked the closest in-stock sizes.

Galvan Grip
$605The Grip takes Galvan's heavy-duty Torque-series construction and adds a fully sealed, watertight drag system — only anodized aluminum ever sees the elements. Hybrid ceramic bearings and extra carbon fiber keep the drag silky, the quick-turn knob gives fast spool release and drag access, and the monster grip handle stays findable in a fight. The G-8 carries a WF-8 with 200 yards of 20# backing — right at home chasing bones across a Bahamian flat.
In stock: G-5, G-6, G-7, G-8, G-10, G-12 (Blue Hub).
Best for: The wading angler who dunks reels and wants a drag that couldn't care less.
Ross Evolution R Salt
$699Ross built the Evolution R Salt on the Evolution R foundation but supercharged it with a 16-disc sealed drag of stainless steel and carbon fluoropolymer, good for nearly 30 pounds of braking pressure. Twin counterbalances on the spool cut mass for vibration-free performance when line is ripping off on a long run, and the big frame-integrated drag knob lets you adjust mid-fight with the palm of your hand. Rugged, elegant, and genuinely overbuilt for bonefish.
In stock: 7/8 (Chartreuse).
Best for: The reel-slammer who wants flagship braking power and likes being seen doing it.

Abel SDS 7/8
$1329Winner of Best New Saltwater Reel at the 2016 ICAST/IFTD show, the SDS (Sealed Drag Salt) packs a unique multi-disc drag with an industry-leading 20+ pounds of braking power, completely sealed from the elements. Machined from 6061-T651 cold-finished aerospace aluminum with alternating carbon composite and stainless steel discs, it's built in the USA to fight big bones on light tippet and halt hard-charging tarpon alike.
In stock: 7/8 ported (Sunset Fade with Platinum handle).
Best for: The buy-once angler — a reel that will outlast every rod you own.
Fly Lines
The right fly line makes the rod feel great; the wrong line makes you struggle. Overlining by a half or full weight helps load fast-action rods deeper and shoot line better. We mainly fish weight-forward floating lines on Bahamas flats. RIO, SA, and AirFlo all offer full-clear or clear-tip floaters now — nice for spooky fish, but no silver bullet. You still need accurate, stealthy presentations.
RIO Elite Bonefish
$129.99RIO's Elite Bonefish pairs a long head and back taper with a mid-length front taper for smooth loops, long efficient casts, and easy turnover of typical bonefish flies. Low-memory DirectCore lies perfectly straight on the water yet stays stiff in tropical heat, and the SlickCast coating is the slickest, most durable RIO has measured. A purpose-built bonefish line for precise presentations to wary fish.
In stock: WF6F, WF7F, WF8F, WF9F.
Best for: The dedicated bonefish taper — precise, delicate presentations to spooky fish at any distance.

RIO Elite Flats Pro
$129.99The all-around flats workhorse: a mid-length head and long back taper for smooth, effortless loops, with weight distribution that presents flies from size 2/0 to 8. Low-stretch DirectCore delivers hard, solid strip sets, and SlickCast is the slickest, most durable coating RIO makes. One line to conquer the flats, whatever swims there.
In stock: WF6F, WF7F, WF8F, WF9F, WF11F, WF12F. (WF10F sold out.)
Best for: The one-line flats quiver — bones, permit, and tarpon across multiple destinations and species.
RIO Elite Flats Pro 15' Clear Tip
$129.99Everything the Flats Pro does, with a clear 15-foot intermediate tip for stealth — the call for deeper flats, windy days, and fishing the edge of drop-offs. Mid-length head and long back taper for smooth loops, low-stretch DirectCore for solid strip sets, and ultra-slick SlickCast coating. Full floater up top with a tip that disappears on wary fish.
In stock: WF7F/I, WF10F/I, WF11F/I, WF12F/I. (WF8F/I sold out — linked the WF7F/I.)
Best for: Stealth presentations on deeper flats, windy days, and along drop-off edges. WF8F/I sold out — linked the WF7F/I instead. MRFC also stocks the newer Elite Flats Pro Stealth 6' Clear Tip with WF-8-F/I in stock.

In stock: WF6F, WF7F, WF8F. (WF9F sold out.)

Scientific Anglers Amplitude Textured Bonefish
$129.95The first line series with the revolutionary AST Plus slickness additive — shoots farther and lasts longer than any other line SA makes. Scientific Anglers Amplitude Smooth Infinity Salt
$99.95A half line weight heavy to turn over any fly on the windiest days, with an extended head that's more accurate than short shooting heads for landing flies to spooky fish. The AST Plus slickness additive delivers superior shooting ability and the durability to handle rigorous saltwater seasons. A smart overline option for fast-action 8wts.
In stock: WF7F, WF8F, WF9F, WF10F, WF11F, WF12F.
Best for: Windy-day bonefishing and quick-loading shots where a half-weight heavy helps.
Scientific Anglers Magnitude Textured Bonefish Plus 10' Clear
$179.95A new era in clear floating lines: naturally buoyant polymers make this SA's slickest and most durable clear floater, period. The Bonefish Plus taper runs an extended head with lighter, half-heavy weight and a short front taper for long leaders, topped with a 10-foot clear tip so you can track the fly with maximum stealth. EST+ additive and Shooting Texture for unmatched durability and longer casts.

Best for: Ultimate stealth — a clear floating line for the spookiest tailing fish.

AirFlo Superflo Ridge 2.0 Flats Universal Taper

The Ridge 2.0 Superflo treatment trims line diameter for better performance. The most versatile taper in AirFlo's saltwater flats range — the pick when you don't know what the day will bring.
In stock: WF10F, WF11F, WF12F. (WF8F sold out — linked the WF10F.)
Best for: The all-arounder for anglers fishing varied conditions and species with one line. WF8F sold out — linked the WF10F instead; only WF10F–WF12F in stock.
AirFlo Superflo Ridge 2.0 Flats Tactical Taper 12ft Clear Tip
$89.97A 12-foot floating clear tip built for super-stealthy presentations when the flats, literally, go flat. The extended head and convex front taper design deliver longer, more delicate presentations with real accuracy — the line for tough conditions and laid-up, spooky fish. Bright sun, flat calm, high stakes.
In stock: WF11F only. (WF8F sold out — linked the WF11F.)
Best for: Calm, bright days when long, delicate presentations and an invisible tip win. WF8F sold out — WF11F is the only in-stock weight; MRFC also lists the newer 2026 Superflo Max version of this taper.

Leader & Tippet
We like 9 to 15ft leaders for bonefish. Nylon works, but fluorocarbon buys extra invisibility and abrasion resistance in clear water. 12lb test covers most settings and most flies — but show up with 10, 12, 15, and 20lb tippet so you can answer anything the day throws at you.

SA Absolute Fluorocarbon Saltwater Leader
$16.95100% fluorocarbon with incredible clarity and abrasion resistance for stealthy presentations in clear Bahamas flats water. Boasts 15% higher wet knot strength than the previous material, so your tippet knots hold when a bonefish makes its first run.
In stock: 10lb, 12lb, 16lb, 20lb.
Best for: Daily-driver 9' leader in the standard 12lb class
SA Absolute Bonefish Leader 10' 3-Pack

Umpqua Deceiver HD Bone/Permit Fluoro Leader 12'
$12.95A 12-foot fluoro leader purpose-built for bonefish and permit, giving you extra separation between fly line and fly when fish are tailing in skinny water. In stock: 8lb, 10lb, 12lb, 16lb, 20lb.
Best for: Maximum stealth on calm, clear flats with spooky fish
Umpqua Linville's Tactical Flats Fluorocarbon Leader 12' Clear
$27.95Designed by Key West tournament angler Nathaniel Linville, who added the extra length to the butt section so the stiffer material turns the leader over and lands straight — no collapsing on spooky fish. In stock: 12lb, 16lb. (20lb sold out.)

Best for: A proven knotless 9' fluoro leader for clear-water bonefish
SA Absolute Fluorocarbon Saltwater Supreme Tippet 30M

Polarized Sunglasses
Nothing can really substitute for having good “fish eyes” — but polarized sunglasses are an absolute must for bonefishing. And let’s be honest: sunglasses are a fashion accessory too. Choose a pair you like from either Bajio or Costa, and then train your eyes to see fish. A lighter lens for dark conditions, a darker lens for bright — but don’t overthink it. I wear the same pair no matter the conditions.
Sun-Protective Clothing
Simms, Patagonia, Sitka, FreeFly, and Stio all make great sun-protective shirts — many with hoods — along with wading pants and shorts. Find what you like, and bring sunscreen just in case:
A Buff or sungaiter is an absolute necessity too. We love the Simms SunGaiter because of its perforated breathing holes — the vented front flange on the 2026 model lets you breathe unrestricted all day:
