UPDATED 4/8/2026
Spring has practically arrived here in the Madison Valley, bringing with it a classic mix of Montana weather patterns. After weeks of sunny and mild days, we've finally received some precipitation over the last few days. The Madison River is currently running clear and at good early season flows. Ennis lake is completely ice-free. I've seen quite a few trout actively spawning throughout the river system lately so be mindful of where you're walking and where you're fishing so they can do their thing undisturbed.
Fishing has been consistently good from Valley Garden all the way through Raynolds Pass. I seem to be finding most of my fish in the slower seams, deeper runs, and shelfy pockets where the bottom drops suddenly. Right now the name of the game is keeping it simple and effective. Nymph rigs are producing best with a mix of Pat’s rubber legs, midges and worms. A double nymph rig under an indicator has been the most productive setup for consistent action but on those cloudy afternoons fish are looking up for midges, so don't be afraid to give the dry a try. I've had some luck streamer fishing on smaller patterns like the Jig Zonker Black and White Dolly Lamma. It still has been hit or miss with streamers but I only expect that to improve as we move into spring.
All in all, The Madison River is fishing really well right now. Whether you're nymphing the deeper runs, throwing dries to risers, or hucking meat, the fish are happy and likely willing to play. Get out there while the crowds are down and have yourself a day!
